The band’s name itself refers to the ideas of “Russian Cosmism”, a philosophical and cultural movement that emerged in Russia in the early XX century and was represented by Nikolai Fyodorov (1828-1903), Alexander Sukhovo-Kobylin (1817-1903), Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935), Vladimir Vernadsky (1863-1945), Alexander Chizhevsky (1897-1964) and many other philosophers and scholars. CIOLKOWSKA was formed in Saint-Petersburg in 2012 by guitarist Yegor Svysokikhgor, bassist Ivan Moiseev, and drummer Kirill Tsarkov who were seeking to create sonically intense music that paid attention to various forms of space, kraut, jam, and experimental rock. In the end of 2013, with ukulele player Alesya Izlesa completing the line-up after several personnel changes, the band presented their first professional recording, “Na vysote dereviev” EP.
